Greek history and why you should visit Lesvos to learn more

You're never too old to learn something new or go on an adventure, so why not combine the two and book your summer holidays in Greece on the idyllic island of Lesvos. Get ready to immerse yourself in ancient Greek history and culture.

As an island in the northeastern Aegean Sea with a history spanning over 3,000 years, Lesvos is bursting with Greek history and treasures just waiting to be discovered. Not only will you get to experience the natural beauty of the island, taste traditional Greek cuisine and explore stunning beaches, but you'll walk in the footsteps of Greeks and Romans, learn about the island's important role in ancient maritime trade, and see remarkably well-preserved artefacts.

Mytilene, the capital of Lesvos, was one of the great cities of pre-Roman Europe, and home to many poets and philosophers - Aristotle lived and worked on the island for a time! The Sanctuary of Mesa, close to the city, is an incredible structure that used to dominate the region dating back to 7th century B.C.

Family holidays in Greece are a great choice if you’re curious about the past and want to go beyond the guidebooks to get a real sense of Greek history. The mysteries of the ancients are ready to be unravelled - all you have to do is get out there and explore! A visit to Lesvos is a chance to ignite your inner historian and have an adventure you'll remember forever.

One of the best places to start your summer holidays in Greece is the town of Molyvos, with its picturesque cobblestone streets and crumbling Byzantine castle perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the sea.
For a truly authentic Greek history experience, visit the Museum of Olive Oil and the Ouzo Museum. Then sample the delicious results while gazing at the Aegean sunset.

Greece holidays are the perfect location for history buffs and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, won’t disappoint. Visit the Petrified Forest Park and then head to the small but modern museum in Sigri to check out the fossilised trees and plants from 20 million years ago.

Here’s just a few of the Greek history must-sees on Lesvos:

Mytilene Castle: a massive stone fortress dominating the port. Originally built in the 5th century BC, it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times and it’s clear to see Venetian and Ottoman influences. Climb the ramparts for panoramic views of the Aegean Sea.

The Archaeological Museum of Mytilene: housing artefacts from Neolithic to late Roman times, it offers a glimpse into the island’s ancient past. Don’t miss the famous 3rd century BC Sappho statue!

Journey to the picturesque village of Agiasos to explore the Byzantine Museum. Housed in a 14th-century church, it contains religious art, manuscripts, and other priceless items from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine era.

Situated at the northwest of the island, 3km from Antissa town, at the side of river Voulgari is the 16th century Perivolis Monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The nunnery dates back to 1630 but has been renovated a few times, the style mostly Byzantine.

With so much Greek history and culture to discover, Lesvos is the historic and cultural gem in the Aegean Sea. Come and discover your own slice of Greek history on this enchanting island. Pack your bags - adventure awaits!
