Family Holidays in Greece: Fun and Interesting Activities to Enjoy on Lesvos

Greece is one of the most family friendly destinations in the world! If you’re planning a family holiday in 2024 then look no further! Greece manages to combine many key features that attract families from all over the world year after year, to enjoy fun and relaxing family holidays.

We can help you plan a trip that’s fun whatever age you are, and allow parents and children to have some great family fun! Greece has an excellent climate for family holidays, it’s not too hot, with plenty of sunshine, and has a great holiday season from April through to October.

Lesvos is the third largest Greek island and is situated in the Aegean sea close to Chios, Samos and Lemnos. It’s one of the best Greek islands to visit as a family as there’s so much to see and do. Read our tips for the best activities on Lesvos that you can do with children.

Relax on a Lesvos beach

We can’t talk about a holiday to a Greek island without mentioning beaches! The beaches in Lesvos are very family friendly and the Greeks love children, so families are always welcome. Many beaches are so gently shelving and warm, making them ideal for children to play safely in the shallows. There are shingle beaches, golden sand beaches, white sand beaches, red sand beaches and rocky beaches to explore - variety is the spice of life!

Quieter beaches off the beaten track may not have any amenities but are great for getting away from it. Beaches near the tourist hubs have showers, sunbeds and umbrellas. The sun loungers are also free nearly everywhere (if owned by beach front bars or tavernas it’s good etiquette/expected that you will buy a drink or snack). It’s nice that you can always get shade if your little ones need to be out of the sun!

Boat trips on Lesvos

Depending on the ages of your children, there’s something for everyone on Lesvos and boat trips are no exception. Our in-resort concierge can help you book anything from fishing trips, to visits to Tokmakia islands (the Caribbean of Lesvos!)and amazing sunset evening cruises.

There are also speed boats you can hire and overnight sailing boat trips around some of the island’s majestic coastlines. If you’re lucky, you might spot wild dolphins and seals - truly unforgettable family experiences!

Historical Sites, Museums and The Petrified Forest

There are amazing castles and historical sites on Lesvos, the castles in Molyvos and Mytiline are really worth a visit. Remember to take water as it can be very hot in summer. You can really imagine that you’ve stepped back in time as you explore the ramparts and take in the gorgeous views. There’s also an ancient sanctuary called Mesa that was built for the Greek Gods - great if your kids are into Greek Mythology!

Lesvos is an international UNESCO Geopark due to the expanse of amazing petrified forest - trees turned to stone! The park is an awe-inspiring, lunar landscape of huge tree trunks, and the small, modern museum in Sigri is very educational. A wonderful place to visit with your family while you’re on Lesvos, especially if your children love the geography, geology and the outdoors!

To understand the island of Lesvos and its main industries of Olive oil production and Ouzo ( the world famous Greek spirit) there are also museums showing how these are produced and the history. You can sample the local produce and get a true sense of the Greek pride in the local products.

Sports on Lesvos island

As you’d expect from an island with miles of beautiful coastline and amazing unspoilt nature, there are plenty of sporty activities on offer too - you can try your hand at waterskiing, parasailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding from the various water sports centres across the island. The snorkelling is great and you can also learn to scuba dive.

There’s also volleyball on the beach, mountain-biking off the beaten track, hiking to waterfalls and into the mountains or horse-riding through the hills. If you are an energetic family who need to be active there’s plenty to choose from on the island of Lesvos!

Eating Out

Eating out can be stressful with children but it’s a lot less so in Lesvos and there's some great food for children to try! The Greeks love children. They are the most welcoming locals and there are many family-run tavernas - they will happily serve you and your little ones at any time of day and are always happy to meet any special requests!

Kids will love the local mini cheese pies and meatballs (which can always be served with pasta if needed!), and teens will enjoy trying the fresh calamari and seafood. Indeed if you’re lucky enough to catch a fish at the harbour, then the local restaurants are usually kind enough to cook it for you! If you visit in June/July, the Lesvos Food Festival, where you can try Lesvos’ Specialities, even runs kids cooking lessons.

There’s even more to make your family getaway extra special - visit Molyvos and Skala Eressos in summer and you can experience the open-air cinema! Watching a film with the stars above you is such a delight. Usually the latest movies are shown two or three times a week in peak season.

Lots of the accommodation on Lesvos is suitable for families, from family rooms and suites in hotels, to two bedroom villas, to detached village houses. The owners are happy to provide cots and highchairs if required.
