Sitting in the sparkling turquoise Aegean Sea, Lesvos is a warm and sunny emerald gem of Greece. It is a whole continent in miniature: spectacular beaches, high mountains and wild forests on Greece's third largest island.
Due to the island's size and variety, there's something for everyone: beach holidays, activity holidays, gastronomic tours, nature attractions and spectacular geography.
Here at Real Lesvos we aim to gradually make the wonder and attractions of Lesvos more easily available to the UK traveller. In the map below you'll find an ever-increasing list of our favourite things to do and see on Lesvos!
As a member of the European Geoparks Network and the Global Geoparks Network, the entirety of Lesvos island has been dubbed “Lesvos Geopark” due to its geological heritage, educational projects and its long-standing geotourism! As such, it has around 400 miles of paved road.
Immerse yourself in Lesvos’ traditions and culture by cycling. Get out off the beaten track on two wheels and take in island-life at a slower pace. There are many bike tours you can join such as those offered by Lesvos Ride based in Mytilene or Molyvos Bikes. Whatever your physical condition, discover the variety of birds, flora and fauna that call Lesvos home and stop by the wonderful unspoilt beaches, archaeological and religious monuments that the island has to offer. Cycling enthusiasts tend to congregate on the island during the Spring and Autumn when it is dry but not too hot… so don’t be shy, go ahead and find your new riding buddy among the local community!
There are Bike Rental Shops offering bikes for independent adventure as well as mountain bikes and racing bikes for more serious riders. Whichever path you choose, all roads lead to more beauty here on Lesvos! We particularly like riding around the mountain region by Molyvos town for a stunning view of the Aegean while passing through quaint villages where you can take a pit-stop at any time! In fact, every May locals and visitors take part in the Mountain Bike Race through Molyvos – it is truly inspirational watching participants navigate the old narrow roads and cobbled steps through town with such speed!
On your ride, always watch out for the herds of goats or sheep that might cross your path or listen out for the jingle of their dangling bells. The streets of Lesvos are safe but we do recommend wearing bright colours while you’re riding at all times of the day but especially in the evening and at night! Remember to ride on the right side of the road and don’t forget to bring water and sunscreen.
