By Antissa town, atop of mount Ordymnos Ypsilou monastery lies, dedicated to Agios Ioannis Theologos. There is substantial evidence that it is of Medieval origin c. 800 A.D., while Turkish occupiers in the 16th century chose to reconstruct parts of it. The basilica can be distinguished by its breathtaking wall paintings and especially by its iconostasis. It also contains the iconostasis belonging to the church of Agioi Pateres. Entering the monastery cloisters, one can discover manuscripts and church traditions. After the island’s liberation from the Turks in 1912, Ypsilou also participated in events, to promote social activity while raising money for charity.
