There's a reason we've been coming here for 20 years
Sitting in the sparkling turquoise Aegean Sea, Lesvos is a warm and sunny emerald gem of Greece. It is a whole continent in miniature: spectacular beaches, high mountains and wild forests on Greece's third largest island.
Due to the island's size and variety, there's something for everyone: beach holidays, activity holidays, gastronomic tours, nature attractions and spectacular geography.
Here at Real Lesvos we aim to gradually make the wonder and attractions of Lesvos more easily available to the UK traveller. In the map below you'll find an ever-increasing list of our favourite things to do and see on Lesvos!
The village is on the main circular route that runs through beautiful wooded countryside around the twisting coastal road from Molyvos to Mantamados. Visitors often head straight to the beaches and tavernas in Skala Sykamineas but we encourage you to stop and gaze upwards.
Sykaminias is largely hidden from view but, to taste a slice of traditional village life, park on the edge of town and climb up through the narrow paths linking the modern world to the past.
Perched high on the north side of Lepetymnos hill, with stunning views over the strait separating Greece from Turkey, Sykamineas is one of the best-preserved hill towns on Lesvos. Its steep twisting alleys lead up through the village while defying gravity as if to show you just how modern life thrives in challenging places.
As with any adventure, there is a pleasant surprise to be found. Amidst the verdant hillside, fearless travellers who have made it to the top will find a vibrant square with tavernas and local shops. Feel at one with nature as you peer beyong the Aegean strait at Rachta.
Marvel at traditional Sykaminean houses with their beautiful ornate gardens and visit the famous writer and journalist Stratis Miravilis’ home, who fought in the Balkan and Civil Wars. This large family home is now the fascinating Folklore Museum of Sykaminea where you can travel back in time and find out more about daily life in Ottoman and post-Ottoman Sykaminea! The fashion-curious will also find this museum to be a treat with displays of local dress over the years.
